He slept soundly until just after dawn, when the door flew open and Boris leapt into the room. Before he could react, handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, first his left, then his right. Then Boris flipped him onto his stomach, so that he was resting on the cuffs and immobilized.
“I’m sorry to do this, my friend, but if you do what I tell you all will go well. Do not shout or make any loud noise.
“A very important man in America wants something done. You will have only a small part in it, and when it is done you will be released without harm. Is your boss at his restaurant now?”
Alexander nodded. “This is the time he arrives.”
“Good. You are going to call in sick and tell him I will substitute for you today. He likes my work so he will not object. When my shift is over I will free you, and then I will leave Paris. Do you agree?”
Again, Alexander nodded.
“Good. You are being smart about this.” He picked Alexander’s phone from the nightstand, an old one connected to the wall with a cord, and dialed the number from memory, pausing before the last digit.
“Remember. You are sick, but I am staying with you and will work in your place. If you get it wrong you will suffer.” He pressed the last number, then put the receiver to Alexander’s ear and moved close so he could hear.
The phone rang for a long time, but just before it would have gone to voice mail, Maxim picked it up.
“Monsieur, I seem to have picked up a stomach bug last night. I did not feel well when I came home but thought it would be better by now, but it is not. My cousin Boris is visiting me and will be my substitute today. Will that be satisfactory?”
Maxim grudgingly accepted the inevitable.
“Of course, Alexander. Try to come back tomorrow.”
“I will be there tomorrow.”
Boris told Alexander to turn over and raise his arms over his head. He unlocked one of the cuffs, ran the chain around a bar on the headboard, and relocked it. The ankles were next – he strapped them tightly to the foot of the bed with duct tape. Alexander could move, but not enough to escape.
Then Boris went to the shelves where Alexander kept his clothes and found a clean sock. “Open your mouth,” he commanded, and Alexander did as he was told. Boris tore a long strip off the top sheet and used it to tie the gag in place.
“Now I will wait until it is time to go to work. Don’t make any noise,” Boris said. Leaving the door open, he went and sat down in the living room.
At 10:30 Alexander heard Boris leave and lock the door. He waited fifteen minutes, then tried to rub the duct tape away from around his ankles, but only succeeded in tightening it. If he could free his feet, he reasoned, he could slide up the bed to reach the gag with his hands and remove it, then call the police.
